EVALUATION OF SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN (SSA) PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN HIMACHAL PRADESH WITH RESPECT TO QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AT ELEMENTARY STAGE
Anil KumarAgnihotri
Abstract
The state of Himachal Pradesh has been successful to a great extent in making elementary education accessible to nearly all
through rapid expansion of school network, achieving an exceptionally high teacher-pupil ratio, increasing enrolment at
elementary stage and decreasing drop out rate considerably. However, the quality of education, particularly at the elementary
stage, continues to be a matter of concern as is evident from the results of present study. It seems that the upgrading of physical
infrastructure and deployment of more than adequate number of teachers has not brought about the expected improvement in
the standards of education. The results of the study may prove to be beneficial to policy planners in reviewing their policies in
the context of improving quality of education at elementary stage. The results of the study may also generate awareness that it
is not sufficient to provide infrastructure alone but is also equally necessary to identify factors that are essential in order to
achieve the aforesaid goal of SSA.

Madhumathi, P.
Abstract
To Excel in Standards of Education in India, a well-defined list of competencies in Academic language used in education
becomes mandatory. As far as academics are concerned, English is the language of study at higher education level. It is used
in multilingual context within India. Therefore, the quality of English language education must be improved to reach the
national standards in education. In addition to that, there is a steady increase in the demand for English at global level. These
invoke the idea of standardizing the national curriculum for English with appropriate competences to meet the global
requirement. To educate the students with Standard English, first the teachers of English have to be trained with global
benchmarks. This act of refining curriculum for English language ensures considerable quality in acquiring English language
competence for teaching and learning process. Thus, this paper validates the position of NCERT curriculum for English, on
par with global standards in English Education.

Abstract
The need for self-esteem tools for teenagers is universally accepted, because teenage years are the most difficult years in a
person's life. Students who esteem themselves are less likely to engage in destructive and self-destructive behaviors and yoga
plays a major role in the development of self-esteem. Researchers conducted the study to assess self-esteem in high school
students undergoing Integrated Yoga Module (IYM). Sixty four high school students with 14.70+0.66 years of mean age
participated in this single group pre-post study. The data was collected before and after 5 days of IYM using Rosenberg SelfEsteem
scale. The data analysis showed 13.96% increase (p<0.001) in self-esteem scores. The present study shows that short
duration IYM improves self esteem in students, which paves way for their better health and academic excellence.
THE PARTICIPATION OF THE FEMALE SEX IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION: A CASE STUDY OF EASTERN POLYTECHNIC, KENEMA
JOHNSON Adlyn O.
Abstract
This paper employed a case study approach to discuss the status of the female sex's enrollment in technical education in Sierra
Leone. It also finds out reasons for their low participation in the technical sector of education as well as strategies that can be
employed to reverse the trend. The article is divided into two sections. The first section using primary data for the past five
years brings out the enrollment patterns according to sex at the various Faculties in the institution. Female students still look
upon education and vocational careers as their realms and none of them have enrolled for the technical areas of study. The
second section of the paper finds out from focused group discussions using students and technical educators at the institution,
why there is a continuing negative attitude and participation in these subjects. The article reveals that there are challenges
facing technical education and that much more have to be done to encourage education at the tertiary level for girls in the
Eastern Region of the country.

TEACHING PRACTICE IN SECONDARY TEACHER-TRAINING
INSTITUTIONS OF HIMACHALPRADESH-AN APPRAISAL
DevenderKumarSharma and Vimal Kishor
Abstract
The quality of the teachers now a day is not up to the mark and it may be due to the lack of interest in teaching profession.
People are more interested in money making whether it may be a job or a profession. In our country we are still emphasising
on the access to education and comparatively lesser attention is paid to qualitative aspects, whereas quality is more important
than the quantity. Quality education is related with the quality of educational institutions and in fact more on the teachers.
Particularly focussing on the teacher training, it is the skill training in the teacher training programme that provides the real
exposure and practical approach to curriculum transaction. Such programmes include Micro-Teaching, Simulation and
Practice teaching. Especially in Himachal Pradesh we have good access to teacher training and everybody who wish to join
the teacher training programme may easily manages and obtain the B.Ed. degree irrespective of their aptitude. It is the
practice teaching only that provides real classroom experiences and prepares the student teachers for the profession. But there
is large number of teacher training institutions in the state Himachal Pradesh and the schools become overcrowded by student
teachers during teaching practice which results in the disorganisation of allotment of the classes to the student teachers. So,
from this article the authors recommend some suggestions for the improvement of existing system of teaching practice with
special reference to Himachal Pradesh.
TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN TEACHER EDUCATION
J. D. Singh
Abstract
Total quality management (TQM), a management philosophy developed for industrial purposes, is now attracting increasing
attention in the field of education. In recent years total quality management (TQM) has emerged as a viable solution to
achieve the goal of quality. Although business organizations have applied TQM principles with considerable success, its use
in teacher training institutes is largely limited and has received little attention. The indomitable spirit of higher education
paves the way for the growth of a nation in the several dimensions. Teacher education is one of the areas in higher education
which trains student-teachers in pedagogy, which in turn helps them to train the young minds of educational institutions. The
“Fate of the nation is decided in the classroom,” is a remark made by the Education Commission of India. Teacher education
institutions should maintain quality to ensure the academic excellence of trainees who come into the teaching profession.
Quality assurance in teacher education reflects on the high profile of the institution and the competency of student-teachers.
The present article focuses on the need concept and thrust areas of TQM in teacher education in India. It has exposed the
perception of teachers on quality indicators, such as teacher quality, linkage and interface, students, co-curricular activities,
innovative strategies in teaching learning practices, pedagogy, curriculum development, value inculcation, Teacher
Education Institutions and Schools linkages, use of information and communicative technology and governance.
